Vedārambha (वेदारम्भ) is the twelfth of the sixteen saṃskāras. The beginning of Vedic study proper.

The mantra
ॐ सह नाववतु। सह नौ भुनक्तु। सह वीर्यं करवावहै। तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु मा विद्विषावहै॥
oṁ saha nāv avatu | saha nau bhunaktu | saha vīryaṁ karavāvahai | tejasvi nāv adhītam astu mā vidviṣāvahai
May He protect us both. May He nourish us both. May we work together with vigour. May our study be brilliant. May we not hate each other.
What the rite is and why
Where upanayana admits the student, vedārambha begins the study itself: the first lesson of the Veda, taken with the teacher.
Some Gṛhya Sūtras treat this as part of upanayana rather than a separate saṃskāra, which is one reason different lists of sixteen differ slightly in their contents.
It marks the commencement of the daily discipline of recitation, which the student then keeps for years.
