Keśānta (केशान्त) is the thirteenth of the sixteen saṃskāras. The first shaving of the beard — the passage into adulthood.

What the rite is and why
The young man's beard is shaved for the first time with ceremony, marking the arrival of physical maturity within the student stage.
Vows of continence and discipline are renewed for the remainder of the study period, which is the point of placing a rite here: adulthood arrives before the training is finished, and the discipline must be reaffirmed rather than assumed.
For girls the corresponding rite of maturity, ṛtu-kāla saṁskāra, is observed in many regions as a celebration of the first menstruation.
Where it stands today
Rare as a formal rite; the corresponding coming-of-age ceremonies for girls remain strong in the south — ṛtu-kalā, half-saree function.
